Personal Biography

Sangwani Munthali is a gospel artist whose music is described as Advanced Afro-Contemporary (Adfroc) music which is a fusion of Afro-Jazz, Afro-Pop and African Traditional beats with more bias towards Afro-Jazz. He describes himself as a minister of the gospel through music. He was born on 18 January 1975. His passion for music started while he still young. As a young boy, whenever he knocked off from school, he used to imitate the then Malawian local bands (such as Makasu) with his friends. They used empty tins in place of drums.

In 1988, he met Mahara Mhango (formerly Gift Mhango) of the then Mhango Salvation Singers. It was during this time that his passion for music developed further. Chimwemwe Mhango, the brother to Mahara, noticed Sangwani’s music potential and took him as a backing vocalist. He was a backing vocalist for Chimwemwe Mhango (now Rev. Chimwemwe Mhango) until 2000.

From 2000 he started writing his own songs and released his first album in 2003. In between 2000 to 2003, he stayed with Mte Wambali Mkandawire, the Malawian Afro Jazz maestro. It was during this period that he got inspired as to which genre of music he should take. And this mainly happened through observations.

His first album was entitled “Mahomwa gha Fumu” which has 8 tracks. Mahomwa gha Fumu is a tumbuka expression that means “Armour of God”. This album was well received by the public in Malawi and enjoyed the airwaves due to its genre and deep message.

In 2009, Sangwani released “Themba”. Themba is a tumbuka word for “King”. Themba has 13 tracks. The maturity of Sangwani as an artist becomes evident with the release of Themba. In Themba, Sangwani sets the tone as an upcoming Adfroc artist with a bias towards Afro Jazz.
